I'm talking about Abby & Brittany. It's this show on TLC about conjoined twins who have surpassed any expectations for their existence.
Firstly, leave it to TLC to have me hooked on these two gals.
The reality show documents their life as teachers and just regular women living regular lives. They both have Masters degrees in Education. The show shows them on vacation in Venice, jetskiing and just enjoying life like two girls would.
The difference?
They share everything from the waist down. That means they have 2 separate minds and personalities. It's amazing to watch one like something and the other not. I love this show for a bunch of reasons. Firstly, these girls know how to compromise. Think you have it hard sharing one bathroom with your messy boyfriend? Try sharing a body with someone. They have to reach some sort of agreement about what to hold, where to walk to, what to smell...It's a lesson in relationships, for sure.
When I watched the show, I thought about the idea of beauty. These ladies can't hope to look like the people in magazines. They will never look like Britney Spears or Rihanna, even if they work out extra hard. There are no beauty goddesses for them to emulate. All they have are themselves. There's no-one to tell them how to dress to make a conjoined waist look small or a conjoined neck look delicate. They have to come up with their own standards of beauty, all on their own.
I think that's kinda awesome.
The only lesson their parents can teach them about acceptance and fitting in is to be themselves and love who they are. And they seem to be doing well. They seem to be fairly confident gals with a distinct sense of style (did you see the halter dress in Venice? Cu-ute!).
What would the world be like if we all only looked to ourselves for the standard of beauty? How about if, instead of wishing you could be as small as an Olsen twin, you just loved your broad shoulders and curvy calves because no-one else around has those features exactly like you do? Wouldn't that be some mind-blowing shiz? What a liberated world we would live in!
I'm so excited to see what choices Abby and Brittany make for their lives and their individual style. I'm sure it'll be distinct, unique and so them.
